چکیده

The production of anthropogenic carbon dioxide has greatly increased in the 20 and 21 centuries. This greenhouse gas, which helps to trap heat in the atmosphere to warm the earth, is beginning to cause concern for the future. Scientists believe that a shift in the greenhouse gases equilibrium could be very dangerous. In an attempt to reduce anthropogenic CO2, the National Energy and Technology Laboratory (NETL) has developed a system to absorb CO2 in aqueous ammonia. Their samples are given to us to analyze. This is my research: to analyze their samples using an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ESI TOFMS). This machine is one of three in the world right now, and can analyze ions as whole molecules, without breaking them up. After the samples are run through the machine, the data from the spectra is used to determine which molecules are present in the samples and their relative abundances. 2 Isolation and Analysis of Amides form Mammalian Tissue Samantha Sabolick, Korey Coulter, and Mitch Johnson Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Duquesne University

Theoretical description of copper Cu(I)/Cu(II) complexes in mixed ammine-aqua environment. DFT and ab initio quantum chemical study

This work is devoted to investigate the interactions of the Cu(I)/Cu(II) cation with variable ammonia–water ligand field by the quantum chemical approach. For that purpose, the optimization of the [Cu(NH3)m(H2O)n] 2+/+ complexes (where n varies from 0 to 4 or 6 and m + n = 4 or 6) has been performed at the DFT/6-31+G(d) level of theory in conjunction with the B3PW91 hybrid functional. Based on ...

Aqua Group Acidity in Complexes of the Type trans-[Pt(NH3)2(L)(H2O)] (with L = Substituted Pyridines). Linear, yet Weak Dependence of pKa of the Aqua Ligand from L Basicity

The pKa of the aqua ligand in complexes of the type trans-[Pt(NH3)2(L)(H2O)] depends on the nature of the ligand trans to H2O, as expected. With L = NH3 or NH2R and n = 2, the pKa is around 6.0 – 6.4. With L = N-heterocyclic ligands generally higher acidities of the aqua ligands are observed, with pKa values being in the range of 4.7 – 5.4. These values are between those for L = H2O, n = 2 (4.4...

Aerobic nitrification and denitrification among heterotrophic bacterial isolates

In addition to being an integral part of the planet’s nitrogen cycle, bacterially facilitated nitrification is a process of great commercial importance in the wastewater treatment, aquaculture and agronomy industries. Twelve distinct species of heterotrophic bacteria, belonging to the genera Bacillus, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus, were isolated from BiOWiSH’s commercially available water treat...

Fast responsive, optical trace level ammonia sensor for environmental monitoring

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Ammonia is a ubiquitous chemical substance which is created in technical and biological processes and harmful to many different organisms. One specific problem is the toxicity of ammonia in fish at levels of 25 μg/l - a very common issue in today's aqua culture. In this study we report a development of a fast responsive, optical ammonia sensor for trace concentrations. ...
